Serpro joins Governing Council of New Global Data Organization created in Beijing

Global data governance reached a new milestone this Monday (30) with the creation of the World Data Organization (WDO), during its inaugural assembly held in Beijing. The meeting brought together representatives from governments, companies, academia, and international organizations to establish a cooperation platform focused on the strategic use of data and digital development.
Serpro, Brazil’s state-owned company specializing in digital government intelligence, took part in the event and was elected to the organization’s governing council. In this role, it will contribute directly to shaping international guidelines on data governance, information security, innovation, and the digital economy.
Serpro’s CEO, Wilton Mota, attended the ceremony and highlighted the significance of the gathering. “This assembly brings together 42 countries around a common goal: to establish norms and standards while strengthening information exchange, interoperability, and knowledge sharing. It is also a concrete opportunity for Brazil to participate in building these rules from the outset,” he said.
“Global data governance necessarily depends on cooperation between countries and institutions, with respect for each nation’s digital sovereignty. Brazil has much to contribute through its experience in public technology, ensuring that data is used in a secure, responsible manner and aligned with society’s interests,” Mota added.
Data, Innovation, and International Standards
The assembly’s agenda reflected key themes in the global data landscape, aligned with recommendations from international organizations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the World Bank, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, all of which develop studies and guidelines on the digital economy, data flows, and public policy for development.
Among the main topics discussed were the promotion of secure and trustworthy international data exchange, the strengthening of digital infrastructures, and the establishment of standards to ensure interoperability across systems and countries.
Strategies for training specialized professionals were also addressed, identified as one of the key challenges to advancing the digital economy on a global scale.
Brazil in the Global Data Debate
Serpro’s election to the WDO council represents international recognition of Brazil’s expertise in digital government, interoperability, and information security.
“With more than 61 years of experience in public technology, Serpro has built a strong track record in solutions that support essential state services. Being part of this space reinforces Brazil’s contribution to shaping international standards and a more secure, inclusive, and public-interest-oriented data governance,” Wilton stated.
He concluded: “This represents a significant achievement for Serpro, which now takes on a leading role in this field. It is Brazil participating in the future of information and data, helping define how they will be used and managed on a global scale. This accomplishment reflects our competence and the strategic role we play in the country.”
